Abstract

In Indonesia, English is considered as a compulsory subject in school. In education, evaluation is very important to judge the success of the students’ progress in her or his learning. Good English test also helps the students learn the language by requiring them to study hard, emphasizing course objective and showing them where they need to improve. Any test, that is intended to measure the students’ achievement, must fulfill the characteristic of a good test such as validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power. This study focused on the teacher-made English final test which was administered to seventh grade students in SMP N 2 Pringapus in the academic year of 2011/2012. The problem of this study is “How good is the English test items administered by the English teacher in SMP N 2 Pringapus in the academic year 2011/2012”. Therefore, the objective of this study is to know the validity level, the reliability level, the difficulty level and discriminating power of the test items. The method used in analyzing the data is quantitative approach. The population was the seventh grade students of SMP N 2 Pringapus in the academic year 2011/2012. The subjects or sample of the study are 50 students of SMP N 2 Pringapus, while the objects of the study are 50 students’ answer sheets. From the result of the data analysis, the mean of validity level is 0.377. The result was then consulted to the value of r product moment at level of significance 0.279. Since the value of r calculation is more than of the table (rc>rt), it can be concluded that the test items are valid. The result of item reliability analysis shows that the coefficient of reliability of the test item is 0.880. Therefore, the items are reliable. The mean of difficulty level is 0.52. Consequently, the item is categorized as moderate items. And the mean of discrimination power is 0.23, it means that the items are still able to discriminate between clever students and poor ones. Based on the result, I suggest to the teachers as the test makers should prepare items far in advance before they give it to the students. They also should make themselves familiar with the characteristics of a good language test. Finally the writer draws a conclusion that the items in the English final test for the seventh grade students of SMP N 2 Pringapus could still be used as an instrument of evaluation.
