Abstract
In teaching Guided Writing to young learners as elementary school students, teachers need to provide various method and interesting media. In this case the writer used “Pictures” as media to improve student’s guided writing ability. In this study, “pictures” is a set of instrument to help students in their guided writing activity. “Pictures” here include some uncolored and colored pictures based on the material given and some picture cards. The objectives of this study are 1) To see whether the use of pictures influence student’s motivation in guided writing for sixth graders of elementary school; 2) To see whether the use of pictures improves the student’s guided writing ability for sixth graders of elementary school. This study was an action research. The sample of this study was the sixth graders of SDN Cawitali 01 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2011/2012. The numbers of the students were 25 students. This study consisted of 2 cycles. The data in this study were collected through the use of test in the form of writing tests, and non-test instruments in the form of first and second questionnaires and teacher’s journals. Data analysis is done by using quantitative and qualitative description. The research findings show difference in achievement of the students’ writing before and after being treated by using pictures as media. From the data, the writer found that the average of post test (71,80) was higher than the pre test (58,50). It could be concluded that the students had a progress in learning guided writing. The analysis of the non-test instruments showed that most of the students gave positive response to the way of teaching learning process that had been conducted. In conclusion, the use of pictures as media was work well in guided writing class, especially for the sixth graders of SD N Cawitali 01 Tegal. The use of pictures as media influence students’ motivation and also improves the students’ achievement in guided writing area. The writer suggested the teacher of elementary school use various media in teaching learning process, especially in teaching guided writing. One of that was the use of pictures as media to improve students’ guided writing ability.
