Abstract

This final project is about the use of video of making handicraft as a medium to teach speaking skill of procedure text to the seventh graders of SMPN 1 Semarang, in the academic year of 2011/2012. The objective of this study is to find out how teaching speaking skill of procedure texts by using an audio-visual recipe as the medium is effective to improve students’ speaking skill and to find out how teaching speaking procedure using video of making handicraft realized to make students engaged. The object of this study was the seventh graders of SMPN 1 Semarang, in the academic year of 2011/2012. I conducted the research in class VII-D. In order to achieve the objective of my study, I designed an action research that was carried out through a pre-test, cycle 1,and cycle 2. I used speaking test, observation checklist, and questionnaire as my instruments in collecting the data. There were six meetings in this research. One meeting was used for conducting pre-test, and five meetings were used to conduct cycle 1 and cycle 2. The results of this study showed that the students’ speaking skill improved in each test. I found there was a significant difference of the result of the students’ mean score in pre-test, formative test, and post test. The result of the study is also showed that teaching and learning process of speaking procedure using video of making handicraft realized to make students engaged. Students become more active and motivated in the class after being taught using video of making handicraft. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that handicraft video is an effective medium to improve students’ speaking skill of procedure texts. In this study, I suggest the English teacher to use handicraft video as one of the media in teaching speaking, especially in procedure text. For the next researchers, they can use this final project as their references to conduct the other research on the same field.
