Abstract

From the preliminary observation, it was found that the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Welahan were getting bored when learning narrative reading comprehension because the teacher was not using media to visualize the story and merely lecturing using text book. Hence, the objectives of the study were to identify the implementation of Kinetic Novels in teaching of narrative reading comprehension and to show the students’ motivation and achievement improvement in learning narrative reading comprehension. The research method in this study was action research. In the first cycle, I introduced a new media called Kinetic Novel and used the media to teach reading comprehension and followed by the cycle test. The second cycle was to overcome the weaknesses occurred in the first cycle and followed by the post test. The subjects of the study were 32 students of XI IPA 2 program of SMA Negeri 1 Welahan Jepara with the consideration that they have been taught English since junior high school which would make the research process easier. The instruments were reading comprehension test, questionnaire, documentation, observation check list and field notes. The data were taken from the preliminary observation, test, questionnaire and observation during the research. The way of analyzing the data were both qualitative and quantitative. The result of the action research showed that the students’ reading comprehension motivation and achievement in XI IPA 2 had significance improvement after the implementation of Kinetic Novel as media. Based on the study, it was found that the use of Kinetic Novel was very effective to improve students’ motivation and mastery in reading narrative text. Therefore, teacher should always make innovative teaching such as using Kinetic Novel in teaching and learning process.
