Abstract

This final project is a study of drama A Doll’s House written by Henrik Ibsen. The aim of the study was to find the marital conflicts of the drama. Furthermore, it aimed to describe the appropriate spectacle design for the marital conflicts illustrated in the drama. Moreover, the study was about to find the semiotics of the spectacle designs of the drama. In this study, I limited the discussion by stating the research question: (1) What are the marital conflicts in Ibsen’s Drama A Doll’s House? (2) How are the spectacle designs of the marital conflicts in Ibsen’s Drama A Doll’s House? (3) How are the semiotics of the spectacle designs for the marital conflicts in Ibsen’s Drama A Doll’s House? This research was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by reading the script, selecting and identifying the data, and classifying the data based on related research question. The data were analyzed by using sociological semiotics approach. The data collected then were analyzed by using the following steps: identifying the marital conflicts, making interpretation and explanation, making the spectacle design, finding the semiotics of the spectacle design, drawing the sketch of the spectacle design, making conclusion, and reporting the data into appendix. The analysis resulted in several findings. First, this drama portrayed a marriage life of a married couple. It presented conflicts in their marriage life. The conflicts were likely about the financial concerns. Another conflict was about a husband’s dominancy towards his wife. Second, the marital conflicts found in the drama were used to construct the appropriate spectacle design when this drama is performed on the stage. The designs were constructed based on the illustrations from either the dialogues or stage directions convey in the drama. Third, after a thorough analysis, I found several signs which conveyed messages of the drama. All of the actions and properties used by the actors helped to present a particular message through the signs. In conclusion, conflicts of the drama were the important elements in constructing proper spectacle designs. Conflicts helped to construct appropriate atmosphere of the drama when it was performed to the audience. Moreover, actions and properties in the drama presented the signs which have meaning in delivering the conflicts.
