Abstract

This final project is about the use of DPDF (Different Pond Different Fish) in Kang Guru Magazine as an alternative material to improve the participation of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Lasem in writing a recount text. This study is aimed to (1) find out whether teaching recount text using DPDF (Different Pond Different Fish) in Kang Guru Magazine is effective to improve the students’s participation and (2) describe the students’ response toward the use of DPDF. To conduct the research, I adopted an Action Research design. The subject of this study was 26 students. There were two cycles in conducting this action research. Each cycle had four steps. They were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. I began the research by giving a pretest to the students. Then, they got the treatments. At the end of the research, I gave a posttest. While the research was conducted, my partner helped me to observe the students’ activity and participation in learning. The research revealed that the students’ participation and students’ achievement in learning writing recount text improved. It is seen from the significant improvement of the students’ achievement. The students’ result of the pretest was (68.15), then the cycle 1 was (71.53), and the cycle 2 was (80), and the posttest was (85.23). The students’ participation during the lessons was also good. It can be seen from the checklist result. There were six items in the checklist sheet. The result of each items always improved in every meeting. It means that the students’ participation in learning writing recount text using DPDF in Kang Guru Magazine is high. Based on the result, English teachers should be able to use an alternative material in order to improve their students’ participation in following the lesson. It is possible for the English teacher of that school to use DPDF in Kang Guru Magazine as an alternative material in improving students’ participation in writing recount text.
