Abstract

This final project concerns withthe use of blog as a medium to teach descriptive text to the seventh graders of State Junior High School21 Semarang, in the academic year of 2011/2012. The objectives of this study are to find out whether teaching writing descriptive by using a blog as the medium is effective to improve students’ ability of writing descriptive text, to find out whether there is any improvement of students’ ability of writing descriptive text after being taught by using blog, and to find out the changes of students’ behavior after being taught by using blog. The subjects of this study were the seventhgraders of State Junior High School21 Semarang.In order to achieve the objectives, I designed an action research that was carried out through a pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2. I used observation, writing test, and questionnaire as my instruments in collecting the data. The firstmeeting was used for conducting pre-test. The second and third meetings were used to conduct cycle 1 and formative-test, the fourth meeting was used to conduct cycle 2, and the last meeting was used to hold post-test. The results of this study showes that the students’ mean score of writing descriptive text improved in pre-test, formative test, and post test. The students’ writing skill (organization, content, grammar, punctuation, and style and expression of ideas) also made a good progress in each test. The use of blog gave a good improvement of the students’ behavior and interest in every cycle. By applying blog, it gives the students the chance to see their works instantly in interesting online medium and also with prompt feedback. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that there was a significant improvement of students’ ability of writing descriptive text after being taught by using “blog”. While from the results of the observation and questionnaire, the students gave good responses after being taught by using blog. It could be concluded that teaching writing descriptive text by using a blog as the medium was effective and recommended for the English teacher as an alternative way in the teaching and learning process of descriptive writing.
