Abstract

This final project is attempted to examine the use of Proprofs as a medium to assess on line reading comprehension. The main purpose of this study is to find out whether assessing reading using Proprofs is more effective in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension or not. And also, this study is aimed to find out the impacts of using Proprofs as a medium to assess news item reading skills. Proprofs is a Web-Based Test provider which allows us to create and do the test and assignment through the web. In doing this research, the writer used test which concerned with reading comprehension. In this experimental research, the subjects of the study were the tenth year students of SMA N 2 Pemalang in the academic year of 2011/2012. There were two groups used in the research; the experimental and the control group. The two groups were given different treatments. The experimental group was taught by using Proprofs as the medium to assess reading comprehension while the control group was taught without Proprofs. There were sixth meetings for every group including the pre-test and post-test. The data collected were analyzed, and the statistical analysis of the result showed that the average scores both the experimental and control groups increased. In the experimental group, the average of the pre-test was 63.5 and the post-test was 78. From the control group, the average of the pre test was 63.125 and the post test was 75.17. By using t-test formula, the writer tried to find out whether there is significant difference in students’ achievement between the two groups. The t-test value was 0.82 which is bigger than t-table which 2.66 also shows that there is no significant difference on students’ achievement in both group. The result indicates that in the end, the experimental group performed better in the control group, although it is not significant. Finally, the writer suggests to the teachers that they should consider using Proprofs as their new medium to assess students’ reading comprehension.
