Abstract
The topic of this study is the ideational meaning realized in the notes of social networking Facebook (FB notes). In this study, the discussion was limited by finding out the answer of these two questions: how are the ideational meanings realized in the FB notes? and what topic is mostly used in the FB notes? Qualitative descriptive research was used in this study. The data of the study are from three FB notes of English Department Students of Semarang State University that were gained from http://facebook.com. The techniques are choosing, documenting, and then analyzing the data to draw conclusion. The field found in the three FB notes was realized through transitivity system. They were elicited by randomly choosing the FB notes which were written since December 2011 until March 2012. Some references and text books related to the subject matter were selected to give evidence of the findings. The data of the study were in the form of clauses of the three FB notes. All the clauses were taken and then analyzed to figure out the realization of the field and reveal the possible topic of the three FB notes. The analyses of the data used the following steps: First, every note was divided into clauses and then analyzed through transitivity system. The clauses then were analyzed to find the topic of each note. The last step was drawing the conclusion and arranging the report based on the findings. After analyzing three FB notes, four different clause constituencies are found in this study. Ideational meanings are realized in three FB notes. The various topics are also found after analyzing the field realization. This variety exists because the differences of the processes which work in the three FB notes were realized. Thus, English teachers should master the knowledge of ideational meaning especially and functional grammar generally to help them in deciding good materials for the students. This knowledge is also significant for English students. They will have been able to appreciate any kinds of literary and non literary works, if they are able to improve their knowledge in ideational meaning.
