Abstract
Learning English is not only mastering on how to speak fluently and correctly. Learning English means learning on four skills of language. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learning English from the basic level to the highest level needs an effort. This final project mainly aims at determining the effectiveness of using video in teaching writing news item and also to find out the significant difference of writing improvement between the students taught using video and the ones taught using pictures. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Simo in the academic year of 2011/2012. The number of the subject was 68 students. The design of this study was experimental study. The data were gained by administering pre-test and post-test of writing test. By using purposive sampling, students of X-1 were taken as the samples of the experimental group and the samples of control group were the students of X-2. In the pre-test, the mean score of the experimental group was 60.88 and the control group was 61.00. The result of post-test of the experimental group was 78.75 while the control one was 68.50. There was an improvement between the results of pre-test and post-test’s score. That means that these media were effective enough to be used in teaching writing news item text. The result of the t-test of mean difference was 7.75 and t-table was 1.67. It means that t-value is higher than t-table (7.75 >1.67). Since the t-value was in the Ho rejection area, it is concluded that there was a significant difference on students’ writing achievement between students who were taught news item text by using video and those who are taught news item text using pictures. I suggested that teacher should be able to create teaching learning process more interesting, enjoyable, and educative because the atmosphere in teaching and learning process is very important aspect. For the students, video hopefully could be an interesting methods or positive forces for obtaining higher achievement
