Abstract

Pronunciation is important in English speaking activity since it can highly influence the meaning of utterances. If someone errs in pronouncing an important word in a sentence, it can disturb the communication, even it can be one of the factors which can lead to the conversation breakdown. Moreover, some teachers still have problems in delivering the model of the English pronunciation to the students. The aim of this research is to help the teachers in giving a good model for their students by using a website named Englishspeak.com. I want to know whether or not this website can significantly improve the students pronunciation. The subjects of this study were the students in class IPA 1 and IPA 2 of SMAN 1 Donorojo. They were selected by using the simple random sampling. IPA 1 was the control group and IPA 2 was the experimental one. In this research, I gave them a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The pretest used the same instrument in both classes. They were asked to read a conversation text then their voices were recorded. The treatment was given in two meetings. The treatment in experimental class was using the website, while that in the control class was not. The post-test in both classes were conducted after the treatment by using the same instrument as the pre-test. This study revealed that the subject of this research in both classes still have poor quality of pronunciation. It was proven by the pre-test result of control class with the scores of 50.1 and the experimental class 50.2. The result of post test was significantly improved by the score of 63.5 in control class and 72 in experimental class. There were a progress of 28.1 % in control class and 47.5 % in experiment class. From that result, it can be concluded that the medium used in the experimental class that was englishspeak.com gave a better contribution for improvement of students’ pronunciation quality compared with the modeling by the teacher used in the control class. From the conclussion above, I suggest that the website should be one of the alternative media for teaching English pronunciation especially related to transactional and interpersonal conversation.
