Abstract

This final project is based on a study which attempts to analyze the quality of translation of a published product in terms of accuracy, naturalness, and readability. Translation is an activity of getting the equivalence of the source language texts in their target language either semantically or syntactically to get the closest meaning with the source language, which are organized, in a natural and accurate language. A good translation is at least an accurate, natural, and readable translation. The main objective of this study was to analyze the quality of chapters’ summary translation in Bilingual textbook “Mathematics” for Junior High School Grade VII 1st Semesterwhich is elaborated into three sub objective; they are to describe (1) the accuracy, (2) the naturalness, and (3) the readability of translation. To find out the answer for the objective of the study, this study applied descriptive-qualitative analysis whose procedure involves collecting, analyzing and presenting data. This study took chapters’ summary translation in bilingual textbook “Mathematics” for Junior High School Grade VII 1st Semester as the object which the data includesall phrases, clauses, and sentences. The other data were from translation quality assessment done by some respondents. The data analysis found that most of the data in the source text are accurately conveyed into the target text in a natural and readable waywhich has 85.99% of accuracy, 79.74% or naturalness, and 82.01% of readability.The analysis of chapters’ summary translation in bilingual textbook “Mathematics”for Junior High School Grade VII 1st Semestershowed that the chapters’ summary translation in bilingual textbook “Mathematics”for Junior High School Grade VII 1st Semester is an average translation.The researcher recommends that the translators should check the accuracy, naturalness, and readability of their translation work before sending it to the publisher. To translate science text, such as Mathematic, it is recommended to use special dictionary to get the most equivalence of special technical terms. Additionally, the publisher of the bilingual textbook should have an editor team to accurately recheck the diction, grammar and punctuation of the book before publishing due to improve the quality of the book.
