Abstract

The use of journal writing in this study has a purpose to improve students’ ability in writing recount texts. I used real actions of the teacher in response to the problem encountered during the teaching and learning process through cycles of action. So, it was an action research that used eighth grade students of VIII E of State Junior High School 14 Semarang in the second semester of the academic year of 2010/2011 as the subject of the study. In this study, I limited the discussion by stating the following problems: how well using journal writing gives contributions in improving students’ ability in writing recount texts, and how the results of the observation, tests, and questionnaire support each others. The objectives of the study were to find out how well using journal writing gave contributions in improving students’ ability in writing recount texts, and to find out how the results of the observation, tests, and questionnaire supported each others. This action research needed six meetings which were divided into preliminary research and two cycles. In the first cycle, the students were introduced with the concept and the use of journal writing technique in writing recount texts. The second cycle was used to improve what they didn’t achieve in the first cycle, it was for the improvements, and there were some modifications in the second cycle. Writing tests were used to gather data. The tests were pre-test, test in the first cycle, test in the second cycle, and post-test. Besides, the questionnaire was also given to support the data. The result of the study revealed that using journal writing technique successfully improved the students’ ability in writing recount texts. The students’ improvements were shown by the better students’ behaviors in writing recount texts. It was proved by the significant results of the pre-test (59.88) and the post-test (90.5). Moreover, it was also supported by the questionnaire results that writing recount texts using journal was very interesting, very helpful, useful, very relevant and necessary for the students in writing recount texts. From the findings, it can be concluded that the use of journal writing technique is effective to improve students’ ability in writing recount texts. Thus, the English teacher can use journal writing technique to teach the students writing recount texts in their classroom. Hopefully, the next researchers will explore how to improve students’ ability in writing recount texts by journal writing more effectively in the future.
