Abstract

The main objectives of this study are to describe the process of teaching report text by using National Geographic short documentary videos in the eleventh class of SMA Negeri 1 Rembang in the academic year 2010/2011 and to investigate the effectiveness of the National Geographic short documentary videos as instructional media in teaching writing report text in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Rembang in the academic year 2010/2011. The research method is experimental design. There were two groups in the experimental design, the first was the experimental group and the second was the control group. The experimental group was taught by using the National Geographic short documentary videos, and the control group was taught by using text. There were three phases in experimental design, namely pre-test, treatments, and post test. The instrument used in pre-test and post-test was written test. The data obtained has been analyzed statistically. The result of this research shows that in the pre-test and post-test, the experimental group shows better development than control group. The average of the control group in the pre-test is 66.00 and the post-test is 73.14. The average of experimental group is 68.00 for the pre-test and 80.4 for the post-test. The control group increases 7.14 and the experimental increases 12.4. The t-Test used by the writer shows that there are significant difference between the experimental and the control group. The result shows that the students taught by using National Geographic short documentary videos have undergone better increment than the students taught by text. In line with the result, the writer suggests that the use of appropriate and interesting instructional media in teaching and learning process can motivate, grow idea and help the students obtaining the lessons’ goals, in this case, the lesson’s goal is writing skills. Good motivation is important for growing the idea in order to avoid the stagnancy in writing. Therefore, the students can be more active and creative in writing.
