Abstract

Pronunciation is an important part of English speaking skill. Not only grammatical but also pronunciation should be learned by the EFL/ESL student. In Indonesia, most of students cannot speak English in good pronunciation because rarely English teachers teach pronunciation in their English classes. This condition made me interested to study about improving students` pronunciation using phonics method. The problem of the study then is; how far is phonics method able to influence the elementary students` pronunciation? And the objective of this study is to find out whether the use of phonics method able to improve the elementary students` pronunciation especially vowels. In order to gather the data an experimental study one group experimental and one group control and also pre-test and post-test was conducted. The population of the study was five grade student of SD N Pucungroto. The number of student was 40, 20 students of fifth A class were chosen as experimental group whereas the control group was the student of fifth B class of SD N Pucungroto which consist of 20 students. The experimental group was taught using Phonics Method and the control group was not using Phonics Method. Before the experiment was conducted, there was a try out. Then the researcher conducted the pre-test and treatment. The result in the experimental group, the average of students’ achievement was 70.75. While in the control group, the students get 65.95. And at the end of the experiment the researcher gave post test. The result of the analysis showed that the mean score of the experimental group was 81.35, while the mean score of the control group was 72.05. It means that the use of phonics method in teaching words pronunciation is more effective than not use Phonics method. The t-value obtained was higher than the critical value. It meant that Phonics method could be used to improve students` pronunciation. In line with the result, the writer suggest that English teacher should be able to create their own way to amuse their students` interest in following English classes. Students need enjoyable and not monotonous learning experiences. Then, for the further writer could conduct deeper research developing various techniques and method in teaching English pronunciation
