Abstract
This study is about an applying NLP as a method in teaching reading.Judith DeLozier and John Grinder (1987) define NLP as an accelerated learning strategy for the detection and utilization of patterns in the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of teaching reading using NLP to improve the ability in reading skill and whether or not there is significant difference between the students taught by using NLP and those taught by using GTM (Grammar Translation Method) in the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Brangsong Kendal in the academic year of 2010/2011.In order to gather the data, I designed an experimental research. The population of this study was the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Brangsong Kendal. The numbers of the subject was 58 students there areVIII A (30 students) as an experiment group and VIII G (28 students) as control group. There were five meetings in the research. One meeting was for the pre-test. Three meetings were for the treatments and one meeting for the post-test. Three meetings used NLP method for experimental group and three meetings used GTMfor control group. Before the treatment was conducted, a pre-test was given for the experimental group. The activity of the pre-test and post-test the students were asked to answer multiple choice test. In the pre-test, the average score of the experimental group was 69.73 and the control group was 70.78. The result of post-test of the t experimental group was 84.80 and the control group was 79.28. The result of t-value of mean difference test was 2.144 and t-tablewas 2.003. It means that t-value is higher than t-table (2.144>2.003). Based on that calculation, there is significant improvement between the result of pre-test and post-test. The conclusion of this research is the applying NLP hasan effect. Thus the hypothesis that teaching reading by using NLP has an effect to improvethe ability of the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Brangsong Kendal in the academic year 2010/2011 in reading comprehension is accepted. Thus it is sugessted that teachers can use Neuro Linguistic Programming as the alternative method in teaching reading skillfor the eighth-grader of Junior High School.
