Abstract

This final project was about the use of the annolighting strategy to improve the Senior High School students’ reading comprehension in news item text. The aims were to explain how the annolighting strategy can improve their reading comprehension and to what extent the annolighting strategy can improve their reading comprehension in reading news item texts. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Sokaraja especially at the class of X-2 which is located in Banyumas in the academic year 2011/2012. The writer applied a classroom action research as the basic design during the research. The research consisted of two stages. They were a reconnaissance and action stage. In the reconnaissance stage, the writer used the interview as her instrument. In addition, the writer used the journal and questionnaire as her instruments in the action stage which consisted of two cycles. In analyzing the data, the writer used the constructive method because of its practicality. The result of the study showed that the annolighting strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension in news item text. The improvement can be identified from the students’ reading comprehension achievement in terms of the main idea, detail, vocabulary, sequence, inference and evaluation aspects. It was supported by the mean score of the class. For the first cycle, 78.7 percent of the students passed the minimum score with the mean score 6.9, then continued with the second cycle, 100 percent of students passed the standard minimum with the mean score 8.56. In addition, the annolighting strategy could raise atmosphere up at the class since the strategy boosted the student’s interest and motivation toward the English teaching and learning process. It made them sustain their effort to comprehend the news item texts. In conclusion, the English teacher can use the annolighting strategy as an alternative strategy in teaching learning process especially in the reading activity.
