Abstract

In this final project, the objectives of the study was to find out whether there is any significant difference in the improvement of students’ mastery in spoken descriptive text using National Geographic Channel video and without using National Geographic Channel video and to identify the effectiveness of National Geographic Channel video as a media of teaching spoken descriptive text. To achieve the objectives of the study, an experimental quantitative research was conducted. The experiment was held through pretest - posttest experimental and control group design. The population of the study was the eight year students of MTs Al-Hikmah Proto Kedungwuni Pekalongan. The total number of sample in this study was 60 students. The data were collected through speaking test. There were two groups: experimental group and control group. The control group used written text, while the experimental group used National Geographic Channel video. The technique to analyze the data was t-test formula. It was used as a technique to determine whether there was any significant difference between the means of the score of the experimental and the control group or not. The mean score of pre-test data from experimental group was 58.67 and from the control group was 59.17. Further, the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group was 75.67, which was higher than the mean of post-test of the control group that was 69.83. The t-test result (2.534) was higher than the t-table (1.67). Since the t-test was higher than the t-table, the working hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that there was a significant difference of the spoken descriptive text score of the students who were taught using National Geographic Channel video to the score of those who were taught without National Geographic Channel video. The English teacher is expected to be creative in delivering material of learning. They should provide interesting media to attract students’ interest such as videos related to the lesson.
