Abstract
The topic of this study is Conversational Implicatures Found in Dan Brown’s Novel The Lost Symbol. Conversational implicature is the hidden message lies in an utterance. The objective of this study is to find out if direct speeches in Dan Brown’s novel The Lost symbol contain conversational implicatures. If it does, this research will describe how the conversational implicatures are derived in the novel determine the degree of speaker’s consciousness while using conversational implicature. Descriptive qualitative method is adopted in this study. In this study, procedures of collecting data and procedures of analyzing data are used. In collecting data, this study adopted some techniques. Those are data identification, data inventory, data classification and data selection. In analyzing data, techniques of exposing the data, interpreting the data and inferring the data are used. The result of this study is the conversational implicatures 70% exist in direct speeches in the novel from chapter 1 until chapter 8. There are four ways to derive implicatures in utterances. Those are by flouting the maxims, violating the maxims, infringing a maxim, and opting out a maxim. Some of the implicatures are derived consciously and some of them are derived unconsciously. Speakers who violate or opt out a maxim derive implicature consciously. On contrary, speakers who infringe a maxim derive implicature unconsciously. In the other hand, speakers who flout the maxims may be both consciously and unconsciously in deriving implicature.
