Abstract

This final project is about students’ mastery in using expressions of apology based on the curriculum of junior high school to the seventh grade of SMP N 1 Randudongkal, Pemalang, in the academic year of 2009/2010. The objectives of this study are to find out how high the students’ mastery in expressing apology in that school and to find out the most difficult problems that may occur in expressing apology. The objects of this study were the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Randudongkal, Pemalang in the academic year of 2009/2010. I conducted the research in class VII-A. I designed a quantitative research in order to achieve the objectives of the study. The instruments of my research were speaking test and questionnaire that supporting my reseach. I did the research in a day, after giving the test to the students, I distributed the questionnaire directly. Here the students were asked to choose three of the situations, then they showed the conversations about apologizing expressions with me as their partner. The result of the analysis showed that the average score from 36 students was 67.58. There were 22 students who got the score more than 65 and 14 students who got the score below 65. Other clasification indicated that 18 students got B, whereas 18 students got C. Some of them were lack in grammar and pronunciation. Most of the students got high scores in using expressions of apology. Most of them felt difficult in expressing all of the kinds of expressions of apology. They just used the simple expression like I’m sorry. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the teaching learning process of expressions of apology in SMP N 1 Randudongkal is considered succesful.
