Abstract
This final project was conducted to know the students’ mastery in tenses made by the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Pekalongan in the academic year of 2010/2011. It was conducted under the consideration that there is a possibility that Indonesian learners find it difficult to deal with tenses. This study has two objectives: the first is to know the students’ mastery of tenses commonly used in news item texts and find out what problems they encounter in learning tenses. The population of this study was the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Pekalongan. By applying random sampling, I took one class as the sample under the consideration that the number of the sample was about 10% - 15% out of 240 (the total number of population) which equals 24-36. I choose the class that has 28 students. In gathering the data, I conducted a test consisting of 35completion items to the students of XI IPA 3 on May 2011. To know whether or not the test is valid I administered a try-out test first at the same school with the students of XI IPA 4 since I considered that the population is homogenous. The try-out test consisted of 40 completion items which were then found out that 35 items were valid and 5 items were not. The statistical analysis of the test showed that the mean of the score was 71 while the standard deviation was 8.42. Their ability in simple past tense is 85.06% right answer; simple present tense is 86.07% right answer; present perfect tense is 47.86% right answer; future tense is 37.5% right answer and past perfect tense is 37.5% right answer. I also computed the data non-statistically by using criterion-referenced grading proposed by Tinambunan. The result of the test showed that there is 0 students (0 %) get outstanding achievement, 3 students (10.71 %) get very good achievement, 9 students (32.14 %) get satisfactory achievement, 12 (42.86 %) get poor and the rest or 4 students (14.29 %) fail to master the tenses commonly used in news item texts. There were 16 students got scores above the average score and 12 students got score under 71. Based on the result, I concluded that the most difficult area they encountered in tenses was in past perfect tense. It can be generalized that their mastery was good enough. In other words, the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Pekalongan in the academic year 2010/2011 have sufficiently mastered tenses commonly used in news item texts.
