Abstract

This study analyzes the aspects of the American society in the twenty-first century reflected through the symbol of vampire in Meyer’s Twilight. This final project is aimed at finding out the aspects of American society reflected through the symbol of vampire in the novel.I employ Stephenie Meyer’s Twilightas the object of this study. This study is a descriptive qualitative study with sociology in literature as the approach. It is descriptive qualitative since the data of the study are in the form of description and identification of the text, such as words, phrases, idioms, sentences and dialogues. Due to every phenomena occurs in the author’s social life is providing the author reflective issue and inspiration in creating a work of art, the sociological approach is used to identify the social aspects within the story. In the novel, the characters of James and the Cullens depict the economic and potitical systems in America. In the economic point of view, they represent capitalism and the more social system in America. The first symbol found in the novel is the vampire’s habit of sucking human blood and making human as the victim. In the real world, it represents capitalist system which torments common people. The second symbol is the habit ofthe Cullens who does not suck human blood, but replaces it with animal blood. It is the symbol of a new economic system that is more social. The Cullens does not let human become the victim. This study also finds James and the Cullens as the symbols of individualism and collectivism. The individualism shown by James represents the capitalist system that has characteristic of selfishness. He always tries to get what he wants for his own pleasure. While the collectivism derives from more social economic system and it focuses on working together. It isreflected by the Cullenswho alwaysapplies family bond in their lives. In political point of view, the characters of James and the Cullens become the icons of Republican and Democrat. Republic party is represented by the figure of vampire James. James’s intention to ight againts the Cullens depicts the American party that helps Israel to fight againts terrorism in Iraq that only intends to expand its territory and retrieve the natural resources there. The Cullens seems to represent the Democrat Party. They try to socialize well with other people in the communities where they live. It is the same with the Democrat characteristic that is more social liberal. There is a suggestion can be offered after analyzing this study. In interpreting symbol, the readers must interpret it in intense way. The deeper reading and analysis might help in the process of finding the meaning.
