Abstract

Reading a literary work can bring an imaginary adventure and open our minds if we try to look more deeply to the work. Novel is one form of literary works which can be a medium to bring us to a new understanding of life and social phenomena which occur around them. It leads me to conduct a study on a novel as my final project, which is entitled Old Celtic Tradition: Its Structure and Function in C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This study analyzes the structure and function of Old Celtic tradition that is implicated in the story. I employ C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as the object of this study. This study is a descriptive qualitative study with sociology in literature and structural functional theoretical approach as the approaches. This investigation results in several findings. First, structure of Old Celtic tradition in the story consists of two structures those are structure of tradition supporters: chief or highest ruler, representatives, storytellers, musicians, poets, and common people; and structure of tradition: oral tradition, musical tradition, poetry tradition, spiritual tradition, and feast tradition. Those structures are related to one another. Second, the function of Old Celtic tradition in the story that covers the function of tradition supporters: policy-maker, accomplice, people who influence society’s way of thinking, and target of the implementation of tradition; and the function of tradition: education, as the science of nature and moral philosophy, and as the belief. The final conclusion of this study is that to keep tradition, we need a distinct and capable structure and function of tradition supporters. On the basis of the conclusions, several suggestions can be offered. The suggestions can be drawn in brief that in reading a literary work, the readers should see everything from different point of views. This might help them to see something more objectively as in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in which they are helped to be more aware about tradition.
