Abstract

This study analyzes the discrimination between pure blood and mix blood, Black vs. Mulatto because of the influence of white. Dark was ugly and a sign of bad luck in the 19th century America especially for the dark woman. This final project was aimed at analyzing the nigger woman’s life in America at the time of “The Blacker and The Berry” and the objective of the study was answering the statements of problem as below: First, the social hierarchy that illegally existed in America, second, the reflection of Pigmentocracy on Nigger woman’s life as the main character in the novel, third, the changing of the main character from the object into the subject as the verification of the fallacy that strongly existed in her surroundings. I employed Wallace Thurman’s “The Blacker and The Berry” as the object of this study. This study was a descriptive qualitative study with the post colonial criticism as the approaches and using Homi K. Bhabha theories. It was descriptive qualitative since the data of the study were in the form of words, phrases, sentences, narrations and dialogues and I did not employ computation. The data were gained by reading the novel thoroughly, identifying, inventorying, and classifying. The analysis was done by several techniques including exposing, explaining and interpreting. This investigation results in several findings. First, the social hierarchy was illegally existed at the time of “The Blacker and The Berry”. Racism which existed inside the novel in the 19th century of America apparently because of the influence from the white as the subject until they make the system of law of racism named Jim Crow Law that separated and divided among the white, the Mulatto and also the black. Second, Pigmentocracy was one of the kinds of racism that plague the Nigger especially for woman. The new creation of black progeny was made to against the pure black blood. Third, after further investigation it turned out that White was not always right; black could stand almost equal with white with the economic advancement and intelligent. Finally, the main character changed from the object to the subject because of the inspiring figure whom she found at that time. For the next researcher, I suggest to analyze about the slavery in the views of whiteness.
