Abstract

This final project is aimed to identify prejudice, one object of social psychology that has influenced in one’s social life. In my study, I chose Jane Austen’s novel entitled Pride and Prejudice as the object of the study. The main purposes of the study are: (1) finding the characterizations of the main characters revealed in Pride and Prejudice novel, (2) finding causes that form prejudice inside the main female character, Elizabeth Bennet, (3) finding the effects of prejudice in Elizabeth’s life. In this final project, I added some literature which support my study, such as; definition of social psychology, character, prejudice, nature of prejudice, sources of prejudice, and effects of prejudice. In analyzing the story, I used qualitative method, which means that the data are analyzed qualitatively. The data were reported in the form of sentences present in the text and they were collected by some procedures; reading, identifying, inventorying, classifying, selecting, and reporting. The first result of the study shows that the two main characters revealed in Pride and Prejudice novel are almost in contrary. Their social class, social status, cheerfulness, kindness, and feelings of them are proved different. But, they have similarities in certain things. Both of them are intelligent and independent people who are loyal and love their family and friends very much. The second result shows that there are some causes forming prejudice inside the main female character. They are social sources, cognitive sources, and individual factor. The last result of the study shows that that there are some effects of prejudice which have roles in the life of the main female character, such as; judgment, slur, derogatory, and misunderstanding. Prejudice can be minimized by having contact hypothesis, such as; social support and acquaintance, and by having individual’s consciousness such as; having positive thinking and realizing the natures of prejudice. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the main male and female characters have some differences and similarities in their characteristics. These different characteristics and some causes such as; social sources, cognitive sources, and individual factor lead the main female character to have prejudice towards the main male character. At last, prejudice brings negative effects such as; judgment, slur, derogatory, miscommunication, and misunderstanding between the main male and female characters. Some solutions to minimize prejudice are by having contact hypothesis and individual’s consciousness. However, I suggest to the readers to understand the prejudice itself in order to be aware of it because prejudice brings negative effects in one’s life. For the next researchers who want to conduct the similar researches, they are expected to use this study as a reference in making final project.
