Abstract

Myth is a traditional or legendary story with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation. We often find myth in our daily life, for example; if we ate in the door, our lips would be as wide as the door. There is a good reason for this myth because if we eat in front of the door we would block others to pass. Myth also influences someone to do a better deed through the motivation of the ancestor’s story. In this study, I would like to analyze the influences of European myth towards the novel. In this research, I would like to achieve two objectives of the study. The first objective is that I would like to find out the European myth found in J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Secondly, I would like to describe the influences of European myth toward J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I used descriptive qualitative method in my study in which the data were in the form of written words and they were descriptively analyzed. There were several steps in analyzing the influences of European myth toward J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The first step is reading the novel in order to understand the detail of the novel. Secondly, I divide the data and non data by marking, underlining, and bracketing of the data or usually called identifying. Third steps, I list all the identified data and take the most relevant data in the list. The final steps, I am analyzing the data and try to find the influences of European myth in the novel. I also used 2 approaches; they are archetypal approach and sociological approach. From the analysis, I found that in J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there are a lot of European myths found in the novel; they are described in the characters, settings, tools, and mythical creatures. Then, there are many details of the novel that show the influences of European myth toward J.K. Rowling’s novel. The influences are; influences in building block the character and influences in choosing the settings, the tools, and the mythical creatures. By studying the influences of European myth I could get more knowledge and a lot of interesting tale about the European myth. In the future, I wish that there will be more study about myth that could strengthen our anxiety about culture. Moreover, I expected that the readers could appreciate works of literature not only as an entertainment but also as a lesson.
