Abstract

The melting pot is an analogy for the way in which heterogeneous societies become more homogeneous, in which the people of different cultures and religions are combined to develop a multi-ethnic society. The term, which originates from the United States, is often used to describe societies experiencing large scale immigration from many different countries. In this study, the writer would like to analyze the absurdity of the melting pot toward the film. In this research, the writer would like to achieve an objective of the study. The objective is that the writer would like to find out the melting pot phenomena that show the absurdity in American Culture especially in Paul Haggis’s movie Crash. He used descriptive qualitative method in his study in which the data were in the form of written words and they were descriptively analyzed. There were several steps in analyzing the absurdity of melting pot in the movie entitled Crash. The first step is watching the movie and reading the transcript of the movie in order to understand the detail of the story. Secondly, he divided the data and non data by marking, underlining, and bracketing of the data or usually called identifying. Third steps, he listed all the identified data and take the most relevant data in the list. The final steps, he was analyzed the data and try to find the absurdity of melting pot. From the analysis, he found that in Paul Haggis movie entitled “Crash”, there are phenomena why people in America unable to share the ideal image of melting pot. Among different ethnic group in America, there are differences in cultural values (Mentifact) for example in the ideal name of a person, ritual or procession, and their working ethic. On the cultural behavior (Sociofact) there are differences in behavior in certain event for example in marriage event and gathering event. The cultural material object (Artifact) were also different, in this study the writer found that there are differences in clothing/ fashion, architecture and food. By studying the absurdity of melting pot the writer could get more knowledge about the challenge of American society which may become a reference to overcome the problem of ethnic diversity in our country. In the future, he wishes that there will be more study about melting pot that could strengthen our knowledge about culture. Moreover, by studying culture and its phenomena will enhance our attitudes to be more respectful, tolerate, and understand other culture.
