Abstract

This study describe about the students’ problem(s) in pronouncing English front vowels. The problems are what mistakes do the students make in pronouncing English front vowels and how well do the students pronounce the English front vowels. The aim of the study are to find out the mistakes that the students made in pronouncing English front vowels and to know how the ability of the students in pronouncing english front vowels. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Ma’had Islam Pekalongan in the Academic year of 2009/2010. To collect the data of this study, the instrument was used to test the students' pronunciation and then the writer identified their mistakes in pronouncing English front vowels which later were analyzed. Pronunciation test was distributed to the students. the students was asked to read the pronunciation test. Then the writer transcribed the students’ pronunciation into the phonetic transcriptions, grouping the students’ mistakes into separate divisions, employing the percentage descriptive analysis to count all mistakes and interpreting the result of the data analysis. Finally, the result of the analysis shows that students are considered “Poor” in pronouncing english front vowels. The total percentage of various mistakes in pronouncing English front vowels is 35.34% from the total 2040 pronunciations. The dominant mistakes are in pronouncing vowels [] and [æ], there are 42.45% for vowel [] and 43.49% for vowel [æ]. Based on the result of the data analysis, it is concluded that the eighth grade students have some problems in pronouncing English front vowels that might influence the students' achievement in pronouncing English words (especially English front vowels). To help the students improve their pronunciation proficiency, the writer suggests that they should be given alot of drills and practices in pronouncing vowels [æ] and [] because the results shows that the students often make mistakes in pronouncing these front vowels. Students in this school should learn more about pronunciation especially in pronouncing english vowels and they should have good self awareness in motivating themselves to pronounce English words correctly. Such as: by reading English book, novel or magazine, listening English songs, and watching English movie. It might be helpful to improve their English pronunciation.
