Abstract

Teaching reading news item text using “2010 FIFA WORLD CUP” Article taken from The Jakarta Post Newspaper as an Alternative Reading News Item Material is qualitative study, which is aimed at developing the senior high school students’ ability in reading. The subject of experiment was students of grade XII IPA 1 of SMA Negeri 1 Tengaran. The research was conducted in the second semester in the academic year of 2009/2010. The observation was conducted in two meetings. In the first meeting, I conducted an introductory activity. In this session, I observed the activities in the classroom while the teacher used the material for teaching reading news item. While in the second meeting, I used the session to take data from the students and and teachers. In this case, I used questionnaire and guided interview. From the classroom observation, the activities that were applied were reading aloud, reviewing the literature elements and generic structure of the story, vocabulary review, class discussion, and group presentation. Meanwhile, the results of analysis in this study are based on two points of view. The first is the questionnaire result, it shows that most of the students were interested in the article. The second is the result of the interview, it shows that the teachers were interested in using the article as reading material in teaching reading news item. From this research, I conclude that the students are able develop their reading ability by using “2010 FIFA World Cup” article. The article made the English reading class more interesting and enjoyable. Then, It could enrich the students’ vocabulary. The article also could improve students’ mastery of grammar. Meanwhile, I would like to offer some suggestions. As English teachers, we should make an effort to motivate the students to improve their reading skills by providing various materials and activities. Then, to be a fluent reader, students should read more materials especially in English version. In this case, an article from English newspaper can be chosen as a good alternative of reading material.
