Abstract

The topic of the research is a comparative study of using picture cued assessment task and directed response assessment task to improve students’ mastery of speaking. The objectives of this research are to find out if there is any significance difference between using picture cued assessment task and directed response assessment task and to know which one of two assessment task is more effective to improve students’ speaking ability. To achieve the objectives of this research, the writer designed an experimental research. The sample used in the research was 70 students of second grade of SMP Negeri 11 Semarang. There were 35 students in the experimental group that were assessed using picture cued task and the other 35 students as the control group that were assessed using directed response task. Before the experiment conducted, a pre-test was given to both groups. A post-test was given after the treatments done. In analyzing the data, the writer used t-test formula. Before applying the formula, the writer checked if the data is normal by using the normality of the test. The result showed that the data was normally distributed. The mean score of pre-test of the experimental group was 46.51 and the control group was 47.43. While in the post-test, the mean score of the experimental group was 65.60 and the control group was 60.69. The result of t-test based on pre-test was -0.413, while the result on the post-test was 2.387 and the critical t-table was 1.67. From the data analysis, it is found that both control group and experimental group shows any significance difference. It means that assessing with picture cued task was more effective to improve students’ speaking ability.
