Abstract

This study attempts to examine the use of English songs as an alternative way to help the students to improve their pronunciation. The main purpose of the study was to explain the use of English songs as a media in teaching pronunciation. As the source of the data, the writer used a classroom experimental research which was done in three activities includes a pre-test, treatments, and a post-test. Besides that, a questionnaire was used to gather the data. Class X.2 Students of SMA Setiabudhi Semarang in academic year 2009/2010 participated as the object of the research. The results indicated that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement in the pre-test and post-test. It could be seen from the comparison between the mean of each test. The students’ achievement in the post-test was higher than the pre-test. It was also supported by the analysis of the questionnaire which showed that the students’ interest in learning English pronunciation by using English songs was high. The higher achievement in the post-test indicated that the use of English songs by Dido in teaching pronunciation is really useful. It gave some benefits to the students and improved their motivation to learn English.
