Abstract

This final project is an experimental research. The main objective of this study was to find out whether there was any significant difference in the students’ vocabulary achievement after they were taught by using homemade books. The subjects were 42 students of fourth graders students of MI Roudlotul Huda in the academic year of 2010/2011. This study was conducted under the considerations from the writer’s observation in MI Roudlotul Huda that many students find difficulties in memorizing vocabulary because when they learn vocabulary, they did not see or touch the real object. They only imagine the object without any visualization. Through homemade books, students learnt vocabulary through illustrated object. The students made their own homemade books based on their creativity. To gain the objective, the writer did an experimental research by using one group pre-test and post-test design. Before the experiment, the writer conducted the try-out test to get its validity, reliability, item difficulty, and item discrimination. There were 4 meetings in this research. One meeting was for the pre-test, two meetings were for the treatment, and one meeting was for the treatment and post-test. The result of this research showed that the post test score was better than the pre test score. The mean scores of the pretest was 6.5 and 7.9 in the post test. The different mean between pre test and post test was 1.4. The significance increasing from the pre-test to the post-test was 22.6%. The result of applying t-test based on the different mean revealed that obtained value (8.67) was higher than table value (2.019). It meant there was a significant difference in the students’ vocabulary achievement after taught by using homemade books. Based on the result above, homemade books strategy is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. In this study, the writer suggests the teacher use homemade books as one of the media to make the students more motivated to learn English vocabulary. Since students need enjoyable and not monotonous learning experiences.
