Abstract

Translation is a process of exchanging a text from the source language to the target language which involved some aspects, such as the socio-cultural, knowledge, and linguistic criteria in both languages. One of the crucial aspects in translation is deixis. This study was aimed at describe in how the translator dealt with the present, past, and future events from English, as a Source Language and how it is translated into Indonesian as the Target Language of “The Secret Life of Ms Wiz”. This study was conducted under the consideration that the differences in grammatical system of SL and TL frequently causes some changes of the meaning, messages, and context conveyed in translation. The analysis was conducted through a descriptive analysis. I used several steps in collecting the data, they are: reading the book, classifying the data based on time reference, identifying the data of Source Language, then comparing the data. Finally, I analyzed them descriptively (the data were described and interpreted with my own words). The result of the analysis, there were six variations in translating temporal deixis in terms of present, past, and future event. Here they are: (1) translating the SL’s adverbial or certain particle of time, (2) omitting the SL’s adverbial or certain particle of time, (3) shifting SL’s adverbial or certain particle of time, (4) translating the SL’s adverbial or certain particle of time and adding another one, (5) adding adverbial or certain particle of time in TL, (6) adding no adverbial or certain particle of time in TL. In line with the result, it is concluded that there found some weaknesses of the translator when did the translation, they are: the translator is not consistent in using the adverbial of time references, the translator does not obey the English grammatical rules when did the translation. But, from the weaknesses I know that there is a different rule between English and Indonesian whose tense is not applied in Indonesian.
