Abstract

This study deals with the using of realia and demonstration technique to improve students’ skill in writing letter. The design used to discover the students’ skill in writing letter in this research was pretest-posttest nonequivalent group design. This study was aimed to improve the students’ skill in writing letter. The objectives of the study were to know how significant the use of realia and demonstration technique in improving the students’ ability in writing letter was. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gringsing, Batang in the academic year of 2010/2011. VIIIC and VIIID were chosen as the sample of the study based on the English teacher recommendation, since they have learnt the materials of short functional text in form of letter. Thus, the number of sample was 72 students that consisted of 36 students of VIIID who were taught by using realia and demonstration technique and 36 students of VIIIC who were not taught by using realia and demonstration technique. The result showed the pre-test mean of the control group was 16.19 while the pre-test mean of the experimental group was 15.92. Whereas, the post-test mean of the control group was 16.84 while the post test mean of the experimental group was 17.69. Then, t-test was computed. It was obtained from the computation that the result of the t-test is 1.727. Since the t-test (2.171) was higher than t-table (1.668), it meant that there was a significant difference in terms writing achievement between the students who were taught by using realia and demonstration technique and those who were taught without using realia and demonstration technique. Furthermore, the writer suggested that English teachers concern better in their technique variety in teaching writing of short functional texts especially friendly letter.
