Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how effective the use of Barbie film is in improving students’ achievement in listening. In conducting this research, I used experimental research. I used One Group Pre-test Post-test Design, in which the group was given treatment under investigation. Here Barbie Films were used as treatment in teaching listening comprehension. There were three steps in this research, they are; the pre-test, the treatment, and the post-test. The objects for this study were eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Jakenan in the academic year of 2010-2011. The number of population was 266 students that were classified into 7 classes. In taking the sample, I used random sampling. Class VIII G was selected. This class consists of 36 students. I used test as the instrument to collect the data. To find out whether the test was good or not to be used as instrument, I conducted try out test to find out its validity, reliability, discriminating power, and difficulty level of each item. I held the try-out test to 22 eight grade students. Then, I began the research by giving the pre-test to the students. The film that I used for pre-test was entitled “Barbie and the Diamond Castle”. After that, I gave the treatments. The films that I used as treatment were “Barbie and the Magic Pegasus”, and “Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses”. At the end of the research, I conducted the posttest. In post-test, the items used were the same as the one used in pre-test. Later, I calculated the research findings statistically to find out if there is any improvement in students’ achievement. Based on the findings of this research, the mean score of pretest is 59.35 and the mean score of post test is 74.26. The mean of posttest is higher than the pretest which means that there is an improvement in students’ achievements. From the t-test calculation the t value is 19.867, on α (level of significance) 5%, d.b=35 the ttable is 2.032. The t value is higher than ttable, it means that statistically there is a significant improvement in students’ achievements. Thus, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted that “the use of Barbie films improves the students’ listening skills” and consequently null hypothesis (H0) that states “the use of Barbie films does not improve the students’ listening skills” is rejected. Based on findings, it can be suggested that Barbie films be used as an alternative material in teaching listening because of their effectiveness proven in this study.
