Abstract

This thesis is based on the study which attempted to find out the contribution of using big books in improving students’ retelling ability. In this study, the writer limited the discussion by stating the problem: How far is the contribution of big books in improving students’ retelling ability of the second class students of ‘Beetle Bug Preschool and Kindergarten Semarang’? The objective of this study was to explain and describe the contribution of using big books in improving Kindergarten-2 class students’ retelling ability of Beetle Bug Preschool and Kindergarten Semarang. The writer only took 7 students from 8 students in that class because there was only a student which refused to follow my research, so she only took 7 students (3 girls and 4 boys). It was conducted on July 4th until 24th 2011. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the writer designed an action research using pre-test and post-tests. Several storytelling activities had been used as treatments and oral retelling test was used for obtaining data from the students. Besides, the questionnaire was also given to support the data. In the first activity, the writer gave a pre-test as a tool for knowing students retelling ability before doing cycling and make treatments design. The second and the third activities were given in the first cycle and the second cycle. The result of students’ progress during the teaching and learning process by using big books was good. Results indicated that there were significant improvements in students’ retelling ability from the pre-test results, the first cycle result, until the second cycle result. The result of students’ achievement from pre-test to the second cycle increased 28.4%. Additional data were collected through questionnaire those can be seen that most of students chose to use big books as media to help them in retelling story because these books could build a fun atmosphere in teaching and learning process and also could improve their motivation and confidence in retelling story. The higher achievement of students’ retelling scores indicated that the use of big books as media in teaching retelling give a big contribution in improving students’ retelling ability. Moreover, from the questionnaire it can be seen that students become more active and interested in storytelling activities and become more confident to retell stories by using big books.
