Abstract
This final project is concerned with teaching past tense verbs in narrative text using Numbered Heads Together of cooperative learning to the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 14 Semarang. The objectives of the study are to find out whether there is significant difference on the students’ achievement in past tense verb mastery between those who are taught using Numbered Heads Together of cooperative learning and those who are taught using non-cooperative learning (conventional technique with textbook as a medium in which the teacher asks the students to work in pairs) and how effective Numbered Heads Together of cooperative learning is in teaching past tense verbs of narrative text to the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 14 Semarang in the academic year of 2011/2012. To achieve the objectives, the researcher conducted an experimental research. The research design used was control group pre-test-post-test design. The writer conducted pre-test, treatment, and post-test in this research. Before conducting experiment, the tests were tried out to make sure that they were valid and reliable. The population of the study was the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 14 Semarang. Using purposive sampling, the total sample was 64 students, class VIII C as the experimental group and VIII H as the control group. In the pre-test, the mean of experimental group was 60.813 and the mean of control group was 62.063. After the treatment, the mean of experimental group was 82.25 and the mean of control group was 74. It could be seen that after the treatment, students’ achievement were improved. However, the experimental group got better achievement. The obtained ttest of post-test was 4.31 and ttable was 1.67. Since the ttest was greater than ttable, it could be concluded that there was significant difference on the students’ achievement in past tense verb mastery between those who were taught using Numbered Heads Together of cooperative learning and those who were taught using non-cooperative learning that was conventional technique using textbook as a medium and teacher asked students to work in pairs. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the working hypothesis was accepted. The students who were taught using Numbered Heads Together technique showed enthusiasm and participation toward learning process. On the other hand, the students who were taught using conventional method were more silent and mostly did not participate in learning process.
