Abstract

Outlining is note-taking technique designed to help the reader see the overall organization of a text by stating the main idea in form of a generalization and gives a list of details to support that general statement. A professional teacher should know the techniques and procedures to find an effective way in teaching. Thus, it is interesting to investigate the effectiveness of using outlining to improve students’ reading comprehension. The aim of this study was to explain how the use of outlining in teaching reading hortatory exposition in order to improve students’ comprehension was. The study was also conducted to analyze whether the use of outlining was effective to improve students’ comprehension in reading hortatory exposition for the eleventh graders. In order to gain the objectives, the writer conducted an experiment. One group pretest-posttest design was chosen as the design of this research. The subjects of this study were the students of the eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Cepiring in the academic year of 2010/2011. Forty students of XI IPA 1 joined as the experimental group. The group was taught reading hortatory exposition by using outlining. After conducting the experiment the writer found out the difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test. The mean score of pre-test was 56.50, and the mean score of post-test was 76.80. If we compared the two means it was clear that the mean of the post-test was higher than the pre-test. The difference between the two means was 20.30. The result of applying t-test based on the difference of two means reveals that obtained value (9.749) was higher than t-table value (1.682). It meant that there was a significant difference in grade of reading hortatory test achieved by the students after they had been taught by using outlining technique. Based on the result, the use of outlining could be an effective technique to improve students’ reading comprehension. The writer suggests that English teacher should be able to create their own way to arise their students’ interest in following their teaching. The use of outlining as a technique is one way to achieve this goal. However, teachers must select the suitable technique related to the material they are going to teach.
