Abstract

In this final project, the objectives of the study were to observe whether drill can be used to teach pronunciation in discussion text and to examine the drilling technique whether it can improve students’ mastery of pronunciation or not. To achieve the objectives of the study, an experimental quantitative research was conducted. The experiment was held through pretest - posttest experimental and control group design. The population of the study was the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara. The total number of sample in this study was 60 students. The data were collected through pronunciation test. There were two groups: experimental group and control group. The control group used modeling technique in teaching pronunciation, while the experimental group used drill. The technique to analyze the data was t-test formula. It was used as a technique to determine whether there was any significant difference between the means of the score of the experimental and the control group or not. The mean score of pre-test data from experimental group was 51.3 and from the control group was 50.4. Further, the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group was 71.6, which was higher than the mean of post-test of the control group that was 64.3. The t-obtained value (0.011) was lower than the t-critical value on the table (2.00) then it means that there was no significant difference between the students who were taught by using modeling and those who were taught by using the drill. As the result, both modeling and drilling are good to teach pronunciation. Teaching pronunciation is one of the significant aspects of foreign language teaching and at the same time it is a very serious task. It must be borne in mind that teachers of language are the models of their learners, so first of all they should have good pronunciation; otherwise, they can harm their students.
