Abstract

This study was conducted under the considerations that the English teachers of junior high school need a technique in teaching-learning process. One of them is using jumbled sentences in teaching reading of procedure text. The objective of the study was to find out whether there was any significant difference in the improvement of students’ mastery in reading of procedure text using jumbled sentences and without using jumbled sentences (conventional technique). To achieve the objective of the study, I conducted an experimental quantitative research. The experiment was held through pretest posttest group design. The population of the study was the ninth year students of SMP N 19 Semarang. The total number of sample in this study was 64 students. In solving the problems, I carried out an experimental study using statistical method called t-test. The writer used two groups: experimental group and control group. In the control group I did not use jumbled sentences in teaching reading of procedure text or using conventional technique, while in the experimental group, I used jumbled sentences in teaching reading of procedure text. In the control group, the mean score of pre test was 60.63 and the post test was 73.23, their score rose 12.60 while in the experimental group, the mean score of pre test was 62.08 and the post test was 82.29, so their score rose 20.21. The computation result of t-test was 4.24. The critical value of t was 2.30 for α = 5% and df = 62. Because t value was higher than the critical value of t(4.24>2.30), it could be concluded that there was significant difference in the achievement between the students who were taught using jumbled sentences in teaching reading of procedure text and students who were taught using conventional technique. It also could be concluded that rearranging jumbled sentences into a good procedure text can improve students’ reading skill. Referring to the experience in conducting this research, the writer offers suggestion to the teacher to improve the students' reading ability to get better result. The use of jumbled sentences in teaching reading of procedure text should be maintained frequently and recommended to English teachers, in order to attract their motivation in learning English to be more interesting and enjoyable.
