Abstract

This final project concerned with teaching reading comprehension and writing by applying REAP technique with picture media. REAP technique is one type of the cooperative learning. The media used in this study was picture media. The purpose of this experimental research is to know whether picture media in REAP technique used in teaching reading comprehension and writing results in a better learning achievement. This research study used pre test-post test control group design. The subjects of the research were experimental group and control group. The experimental group (XI IPA 2) consisted of 31 students. There are 14 girls and 17 boys. The control group (XI IPA 3) consists of 31 students. There are 12 girls and 19 boys. Besides, there was another class that had similar level of competence to be used for a try-out group (XI IPA 1). In doing this research, there were five meetings overall for both of groups. For experimental group, the first meeting was the pre-test. REAP technique with picture media as the treatment of this research was done in the second, third, and fourth meeting. In the last meeting, the post-test was administered to the students to know their improvement. For the control group, the sequence of activities was the same as the experimental group. Nevertheless, the treatment of the control group was different in which did not use picture media. The pre-test and post-test were in both classes (experimental and control group). The result of the pre-test showed that the mean score of reading in the pre-test was 73.68 while in the post-test was 78.50 for experimental group. Meanwhile, for control group, the mean score of reading in the pre-test was 67.23 while in the post-test was 73.55. The mean score of writing in the pre-test was 72.06 while in the post-test was 83.32 for experimental group. For control group, the mean score of writing in the pre-test was 71.84 while in the post-test was 74.65. To find out the significance of the increase between pre-test and post-test, anacova was applied. The result showed that the f-value (27.01) was higher than f-table (4.00) for reading while for writing, f-value (35.85) was also higher than f-table (4.00). Therefore, it could be concluded that there was significant difference of student’s reading comprehension and writing between students who were taught by using REAP with picture media and those who were taught by using REAP without picture media. The suggestions for students, it is necessary that they to improve their reading and writing skill. For teachers, it is recommended that they use various techniques in teaching reading and writing such as REAP technique with picture media.
