Abstract

The Observation shows that the sixth graders of SDN 01 Sekaran have some difficulties in reading comprehension. The students’ mastery in vocabulary were still low and the English story book in school library is very limit. The objectives of this study are to find out the students’ problem in reading comprehension skill for sixth graders of SDN 01 Sekaran Gunungpati in the academic year of 2011/2012, to find out to what extent comic “Naruto” contribute to useful material to improve student’s reading comprehension skill by doing action research for sixth grade students of SD N 01 Sekaran Gunung Pati in the academic year of 2011/ 2012 and to find out to what extent comic “Naruto” contribute to development of their vocabularies for sixth grades students of SD N 01 Sekaran Gunung Pati in the academic year of 2011/ 2012. This study is a classroom action research which is conducted for two cycles. The data in this study were collected through the use of observation, tests in the form of multiple choice, and non-test instruments in the form of first questionnaire and second questionnaire. Data analysis was done by using quantitative and qualitative description. The result of the research shows that comic “Naruto” gave contribution in solving students’ problems; improving the students’ mastery in English vocabulary, and increasing the students’ ability in reading comprehension. Those were proven in the developing of some positive effects such as there was the differences in the students’ interest before and after treatments, the increasing of components in reading comprehension before and after treatments and the average of the students’ result in pre-test was 40.5, in cycle one was 81.5, in cycle two was 92. And 30% of students increase their mastery in English vocabulary after the treatments. It proves that comic “Naruto” potentially motivates the students to understand the story and vocabulary. Moreover this media is very useful to teach the students especially in teaching reading. The conclusion is teaching of reading comprehension by using comic “Naruto” for elementary school can be applied to increase the students’ interest in reading and improve their vocabulary skill. The writer suggests the teacher to use various and interesting media in teaching English to interest the students. The teacher also can use comic “Naruto” to teach students, especially for reading skill.
