Abstract

The scope of English language learning in senior high school is discourse ability. That is the ability of students in understanding and producing text either spoken or written; and it is realized in four integrated skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing in the informational of literacy level. As stated in the Standard and Basic Competence of School Based Curriculum (KTSP), students in the twelfth grade are required to develop their ability in listening to the monologue. Explanation text is one of the texts that they need to master. However, in some cases, most teachers do not much pay attention to the students’ ability in listening to the monologue. They only focus on the written tasks and activities, so that the students lack of practices on listening to the explanation texts. In order to help students to master explanation texts, especially for listening skill, multimedia material is proposed as the solution to help the students in learning. Teachers could also use it as the supplement material in school. Moreover, through multimedia material, teachers are encouraged to develop their skill not only in teaching, but also in developing multimedia material. The aim of this final project is to discuss the students’ and teacher’s problems in teaching and learning process of listening explanation texts, the process involved in developing the multimedia material and the responses of students and teacher after they use the multimedia material. This study used the research and development (R&D) and qualitative research design to develop multimedia material. Some instructional design models from different experts were also adopted and adjusted dealing with the real condition of the field. The process began with the need analysis, designing and developing product followed by the expert validation to evaluate the product, implementing the product, and then doing evaluation to know the responses of students and teacher. .The results of the study show that the multimedia material of listening explanation texts can provide the material very well. It helps the students in learning explanation texts and gives them more practices on listening. The teacher can also use it as the supplement material in teaching listening. Through all the process in the developing multimedia material, it can be concluded that the students need more practices on listening to the explanation texts. The multimedia material that has been developed is suitable used by students and teacher. It also gets positive responses from both students and teacher.
