Abstract

This study is purposed to describe the effectiveness of Value Line to improve students’ ability in writing hortatory exposition text and explain the difference between hortatory exposition text produced by experimental group students which received Value Line treatment and control group students which did not receive Value Line treatment. Hortatory exposition is a genre of text purposed to persuade the reader that something should or should not be the case. Based on Indonesia curriculum this genre of text is given to the second grade of Senior High School as one of writing materials. The date used in this study was the hortatory exposition products of second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Majenang which were randomly chosen to be the sample of this study. They were divided into three groups; experimental group, control group, and try-out participants. The data was analyzed using quantitative method. The result of this study proved that Value Line technique applied in the teaching-learning process of hortatory exposition text could improve students’ ability in developing their hortatory exposition text. The improvement could be seen from the difference of mean of scores between experimental group and control group. In the post-test, mean of the experimental group was higher (from 63.37 to 73.84) than mean of the control group (from 66 to 70.5). The computation result for t-value for the means of post-test was 3.753, meanwhile the critical value on α = 5% was 1.992. Since the t-value was higher than t-table, it was concluded that there was significance difference between the achievement of experimental group students and the achievement of control group students. Value Line provides more chance for students to share their thought with their friends and gives more experience for students in encouraging themselves to get the improvement, especially in writing hortatory exposition text. The writer hopes this study is useful for English teachers to enrich the references about the technique to improve students’ writing skill and as a consideration for English teachers to choose Value Line in teaching writing. The students can use Value Line as a medium to get optimal improvement, especially in writing and the teachers can get benefit from Value Line to help them create a joyful class condition.
