Abstract
In order to make the teaching English vocabulary to elementary school more interesting and joyful, teachers can use a method in conducting materials by using media in order to attract students’ attention and interest. In this study, I used Internet Picture Dictionary as media for teaching vocabulary to the fourth grade students of SD N 04 Purwodadi. The objectives of the study are to find out whether “Internet Picture Dictionary” can be used as media in teaching vocabulary at the fourth grade of SD N 04 Purwodadi Grobogan, to find out whether the use of “Internet Picture Dictionary” can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement, and to find out whether the use of “Internet Picture Dictionary” can improve the students’ interests and motivation in learning vocabulary. This study is an action research. The target of this study is the fourth grade students of SD Negeri 04 Purwodadi in the academic year of 2010/2011. There were 52 students. I began the research by giving a pre-test to the students. Next, the treatments were given to them. I gave three treatments and the topics given were fruits, vegetables, and animals. To measure the students’ improvement, in the end of the research I gave a post-test to them. I also delivered a questionnaire to them in order to measure the students’ interest and response about the use of the media in teaching vocabulary. The result of the study showed that the achievement of the students in learning vocabulary through this way improved. It was supported by the significant result of the test. The average result of the pre-test was 68.15%. After the students got some treatments, they could increase their mastery in vocabulary. The result of the treatment 1 was 78.07%, while 81.53% for the result of treatment 2, and 85.96% for the treatment 3. Then, the post-test result was 88.6%. Based on the statistical analysis, it can be seen that there is a significant improvement between the result of the pre-test and the result of the post-test. The data shows that the post-test result is higher than the pre-test result. It can be concluded that the students’ achievement in learning vocabulary through Internet Picture Dictionary has a significant improvement. Moreover, the result of the questionnaire was 86.92%. It proves that the use of Internet Picture Dictionary can motivate the students’ interest in learning vocabulary.
