Abstract

This final project is an experimental research that aims to investigate the effectiveness of using wordless picture books to improve students’ ability in writing narrative texts to the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Tegal in the academic year 2010/2011. The objective of this study is to examine whether there is any improvement of students’ ability in writing narrative texts by using wordless picture books. The research method used in this study was quasi experimental design by applying pre-test post-test single group experimental design. This study was conducted at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Tegal as the population and the sample (34 eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Tegal) was taken by applying random sampling because the level of competence was the same. The experimental group had five meetings. The first meeting was for giving the pre-test. The second, third, and fourth meeting were for the treatments by using wordless picture books. For the last meeting, the post-test was given to the students to know their achievement. The result of the pre-test showed that the average score of the pre-test was 74.26. Whereas, the average score of the post-test was 83.38. In order to find out the significance of the increase between the pre-test and the post-test, t-test was applied. After having the test of significance, the t-value (8.09) was higher than t-table (1.9966). From the data, the result of the post-test in writing narrative text was better than the result of the pre-test. From that result, it could be concluded that wordless picture books can be an effective media to improve students’ ability in writing narrative texts. It is suggested that teachers use wordless picture books as one of media in teaching writing, especially in writing narrative texts, to make students more motivated to write English text. However, teacher should use interesting stories; also teacher’s voice should be loud and clear enough to students to listen. Then, for the next researchers, they can conduct deeper research in wordless picture books media
