Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the grammatical equivalence which includes number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice categories as well as to see whether the translated sentences can be justified with the Indonesian structures and the translating problems in English – Indonesian sentences found in recount text translation. As a source of data, the writer utilized the result of English Department students’ translation. There were ten texts. Each student got a different text. All of noun phrases used by the students are listed and then analyzed. This research was designed as qualitative research. The results of the analysis done for each classification are as follows; from 2842 utterances found; there are 63.72% of total utterances found which are equivalence and 36.28% of total utterances which are non equivalence. The equivalence aspect which has the highest rank is voice 14.39%, number 14.12%, aspect 12.33%, tense 6.56%, person 5.39%, and the last is for gender 4.27%. Meanwhile the highest rank of non equivalence aspect comes from gender 12.39%, person 11.28%, tense 10.11%, aspect 4.33%, number 2.55%, and voice 2.27%. Some mistakes are made by the students in translating grammatical utterances. Some difficulties especially faced when they had to translate the Indonesian grammatical utterances into the target grammatical utterances. Some of the problems found based on the data analysis, were: (1) adding and omitting ‘s’, (2) culture, (3) considering tense and aspect, and (4) considering voice. It is suggested that translators should have capability in grammatical categories in Bahasa Indonesia and English so that s/he can find the closest equivalence and the translation is natural and acceptable by the TL readers.
