Abstract

This final project is about using audio-visual recipes as media to teach spoken procedure to the year ten students of SMAN 1 Doro, Kabupaten Pekalongan in the academic year of 2010/2011. The objectives of this study are to find out whether teaching spoken procedure by using an audio-visual recipe as the medium is effective to improve students’ ability of spoken procedure, and to find out whether there is any improvement of students‘ ability of spoken procedure text after being taught using audio-visual recipe. The object of this study was the year ten students of SMAN 1 Doro, Kabupaten Pekalongan. The researcher took class X-4 as her object in this study through random sampling technique. In order to achieve the objective, the researcher designed an action research that was carried out through a pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2. The researcher used speaking test, observation checklist, and questionnaire as her instruments in collecting the data. There were five meetings in this research. First meeting was used for conducting pre-test, second and third meeting were used to conduct cycle 1 and formative-test, fourth meeting were used to conduct cycle 2, and the last meeting was used to held post-test. The results of this study showed that the students’ ability of spoken procedure improved in each test. According to the table of summary of the research result, the students’ mean score in pre-test was 62.88; formative-test was 66.75; and post-test was 73.63. The researcher found that there was a significant difference of the result of the students’ mean score in pre-test, formative-test, and post-test. And the students’ speaking skill (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension) also made a good progress in each test. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that there was a significant improvement of students’ ability of spoken procedure after being taught using audio-visual recipe. While from the result of the observation checklist and questionnaire, the students gave good responses after being taught using audio-visual recipe. It could be concluded that teaching spoken procedure by using an audio-visual recipe as the medium was effective
