Abstract

Politeness is an important thing to be used in communicating with others in our society. We have to consider speaking politely to build good relation with others. Sometimes people have different argument in convey their opinions in communication. The different argument like that can be found in debate. People tend to forget the politeness in communicating through debate. This final project was aimed to analyze the politeness strategies found in Transcript of the Second Presidential Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of politeness strategy that used in the Transcript of the Second Presidential Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain and to explain in what context were the politeness strategies used in the Transcript of Second Presidential Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. This research was descriptive and qualitative. Forty nine utterances were selected in the Transcript of the Second Presidential Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. In conducting this research, there were two steps. The first was separating the data and the last was explaining the meaning. In this research, I found that from all utterances analyzed, the candidates of president showed their politeness by using the strategies relevant to the theory as described by Brown and Levinson. I found that there were forty nine utterances which used positive politeness strategy. I only chose two positive politeness strategies: seeking agreement and avoiding disagreement that appropriate in this study. In seeking agreement positive politeness strategies, I got 4 utterances of safe topic and 7 utterances of repetition. While in avoiding disagreement positive politeness strategies, I got 22 utterances of token agreement, 8 utterances of pseudo-agreement, 2 utterances of white-lies, and 6 utterances of hedging opinions. Then I concluded that positive politeness strategy is used in Transcript of the Second Presidential Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. I suggest that the students should speak politely in debate, especially in use expressing agreement and disagreement because the students can avoid conflict.
