Abstract

Basic questioning is one of the simple way to improve students’ understanding, by asking simple questions to the students. By giving the questions, the teachercanencourage the students to answer and write their thought. Nevertheless, that will helpthem to gain their ideas. Here, basic questioningis used to developstudents’ ability in writing application letters for the eleventh grade students of SMK Dian Kartika Semarang.The type of research I used in this studyis a classroom action research.In this research,the objective of the study is to find out how well basic questioning gives contribution to teach writing application letter that used the eleventh grade students of private vocational school Dian KartikaSemarang in the first semester of the academic year 2011/2012 as the subject of the study. This action research needed three steps thatwere divided into prior observation and two cycles. There were four meetings for each cycle. In the first cycle, the students were introduced with the use of basic questioning techniques in teaching writing application letters. The second cycle was the perfection of the first cycle. There were some modifications of the first cycle which were implemented in the second cycle, which are; some modification in giving the treatment to improve students’ participation, attention, and response. In addition, the changing of the theme which more familiar for the students. Based on the data analysis, it could be concluded that basic questioning techniques successfully improved the students’ ability in writing application letters. The students’ improvements were shown by the students’ interest in responding the questions and their motivation in taking part of the activities in the learning process. Moreover, there was a better participation of the students in the classroom. Therefore, it indicates that basic questioning techniques can definitely developed a better students’ behaviour in writing application letters.
